Martha and Ro have, and that’s what they’re talking about on this episode of Bewildered: How to Get Started.

Listener Josephine asked for advice on how to deal with the resistance that can happen when we need to make these transitions, and Martha and Ro say the key is to recognize the part of yourself that doesn’t want to do the new thing—even if it’s something good for you.

When we have to switch from one self to another self, there is a natural inertia within us that wants us to stay with what we're doing. It’s very difficult to overcome, yet the culture expects us to punish ourselves when we can’t.

Martha and Ro have been working on a theory that embarrassing or awkward moments are actually magical, and they’re talking about it on this episode of Bewildered. 🪄

Ro says that awkward moments can be “a hack, or a portal, if you will, to connection between people because you are breaking the rules of the culture in that moment.”

The culture teaches us to deal with an embarrassing moment by just pretending it never happened—which is certainly one way to deal with it.

Or, you can turn the comedy of the moment overt and bring everyone into breaking the rules of the culture—and humor is amazing like that.

Ro says that there’s a potential for intimacy that comes with taboo things, and we can use those moments if we see them as portals. She asks:

⚡ What if we could use them just when it might seem most dangerous?
🤣 What if we own our embarrassment and the truth of the awkwardness?
💪 And what if that gives us immense power?

"Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me." 🕊️

This quotation by the late genius Audre Lorde stopped Martha’s mind, she found it so profound, and in this episode of Bewildered, she and Ro are talking about the idea of accepting your most embarrassing or awkward moments as a path to personal growth.

While Audre Lorde’s words pertain to a range of things, many of which have much more depth and evil to them (like racism and all the isms), Martha says that accepting yourself is also how you “prime your life for comedy.”

“Accept about yourself the things that embarrass you,” she says. “Once you have deeply accepted them, they cannot be used to humiliate you.”

Ro adds that this kind of radical self-acceptance—laughing at yourself because you won't be diminished even in embarrassing moments—is like a map that can:

🪷 guide us to spiritual enlightenment
🏦 save us from capitalism
👴🏻 help us dismantle patriarchy
🌏 lead us to transform the world

Did you know it’s very countercultural to laugh at yourself? 😆

It’s a powerful truth, and Martha and Ro are talking about it in this episode of Bewildered!

When you laugh at yourself, you bring the other person or people into your embarrassing moment, and that releases the humor. The acknowledgement that the taboo thing happened is the opening of humor and intimacy and release. 🫢🤣

As Ro says, “It's a catharsis, laughing at embarrassing moments.”

Martha agrees, saying that everyone is holding up a rigid mask for the culture, and we’re all trying to keep our egos intact and present ourselves well.

“When we see someone embarrassed,” she says, “we get into that excruciating place—but when that person seems at ease and seems to be enjoying it, it’s a catharsis.”

In our culture, everybody’s always got a little bit of fear of being mocked and humiliated. 😰

But when the person at the center of a humiliating moment is relaxed and willing to let go of their own ego by laughing at themselves, it allows everyone else’s true selves to relax with them. And that’s when powerful transformation and connection can occur. 😅

For Martha, it’s a pressure to be perfect and the insistence that she’s the only one who can make things okay:
